How do i build a retaining wall?

how do you put a solid base so it does not lean over time? This is for a flower bed on a hill.

How do i build a retaining wall?
depends on the materials you%26#039;re using. timber, rock, cinder?

Rock and cinder should have 1-2 rows cemented in below the dirt line.

timbers, 4x6, 6x6, should have 2%26#039;-3%26#039; rebar shoved through to help anchor them 1-2 levels below the dirt line.
Reply:here%26#039;s a link to a page from a company that makes contrete retaining wall stones.. maybe you can pick up a tip or two from it on the base..

It%26#039;s not everything you need to know, but might help a little.
Reply:The base is only part of it, you need to have the wall angled correctly. Also a lot depends on how high the wall and what materials, rock, concrete block or railroad ties. Also you need to think about drainage behind, one of the big causes of failure is water pressure. If the wall is dry rock, you may have enough built in drainage, concrete block, railroad tie or rock set in concrete you need to build in drainage holes or drain out the ends. If you need drainage, then you will need to backfill with loose gravel and put in drainage pipes..

There are many books on this. You need to spend a time researching.

On the other hand, if it is a small wall (1-2 ft high) there is not as much concern since there will be limited pressure behind the wall.
Reply:Here is great video on how a retaining wall is built.
