Help!!! Ideas for making a brown living room look good?

My aunt owned a second house and she%26#039;s letting me stay here since I%26#039;m a college student the house came fully furnished so I%26#039;m kind of trying to work with some of the stuff that I have. I%26#039;ve posted the picture of my living room in the links below. I just really need some inexpensive ideas to make my living room look better and more homey. I know a want flowers, pictures on the wall and a new lamp (because I swear the one I have is from the 70%26#039;s) but I don%26#039;t know what to kind get. Thanks in advance for your help.

Help!!! Ideas for making a brown living room look good?
You%26#039;re right I did have that living room in the 70%26#039;s. Can you paint? It%26#039;s the cheapest way to make the biggest impact. Your pictures show this room flows into the dining room. Keep the love seat where it%26#039;s at and move the couch to the biggest wall, opposite side and hang a big picture. It will open it up. If the wall in the dining room stops I%26#039;d make that my accent wall. Maybe paint it a nice chocolate brown, it%26#039;ll blow that wall out. Check out the candle wall art below. Ditch the blinds. You can get curtain rods cheap and it will soften it up. Here%26#039;s a link. good luck!
Reply:If she%26#039;ll let you paint, I%26#039;d suggest that. It can still be neutral - use a warm taupe that matches the colors in the couch. I%26#039;d use the navy and burgandy in the couches as accent colors. Lots of plants always warms up a space, and is a really inexpensive way to add color to a room.
Reply:Can you paint the walls? if so a fresh coat of paint does wonders. Try 2 different colors one wall one color and another color for the opposite wall and so forth. Curtains for sure will help soften up a room as will framed photos. Also throw pillows and a throw blanket on the sofa.
Reply:My living room is brown and neutral shades, so I added red to it. Just little red accents. Vases, rug, etc. Give that a shot.
Reply:What you need more than anything else is some color on the walls. Ask her if she minds if you paint. If she doesn%26#039;t then you need a big colorful art piece on the wall across from the couch.
Reply:I say RED all the way!!!!!! You will be amazed at how homie it will make it.
Reply:well you have a good start but the furniture placement is wrong try putting the love seat against the window or angled in that corner where you now have your TV.that should open up the room a little.if you do that you should be able to get a tall leafy plant to put in between the door and window-as for the lamp something tall will also be good-and for heavens sake girl get some color in there!an inexpensive idea is getting a few large canvases and painting them in solid colors maybe 4 or five would work starting in the dining area and going the full length of the room,it will give a more modern twist to the space !if you can send more pictures of the furniture in the new placement-we can continue from there
Reply:I would add some color to your living room, by taking one of the colors in the sofa and using it throughout the room. Did I see teal in the sofa? A nice throw gently draped on one end of the sofa would spice it up. You could get a lamp in the same color, so it would coordinate well. You already know you need wall decor, so find something that you like. You will be looking at this for a while, so make it something special. Would your aunt allow you to put a shelf up? If so paint it to match your throw and lamp and put accessories on it such as colored bottles, neat looking vases, whatever you like. You can make this a special place, all your own. Study hard, it will pay off. Good luck!
Reply:Firstly put some voile up at the windows, you can still keep the blinds, put the voile on the outside of the blinds, this will soften the windows and is not expensive.

Add some pretty cushions on the sofa, maybe some fluffy ones or some with texture, some soft browns and maybe chocolate, these will also go with the carpet.

The lamp could be updated with a trendy lampshade, and buy a matching shade for the ceiling light.

Buy posters and frames for the walls, as you can buy them in larger sizes you wont need so many. The other choice is to buy blank canvas%26#039;s and some sample paints and do your own art work.

If your budget will stretch to it maybe buy a nice throw or two for the sofas, maybe go for a teal colour, with will go with the other colours in the room and brighten the room up!
